Hippocrates, The Greek Father of Medicine said Do No Harm

by Cindy Soto

Hippocrates, the Greek philosopher and scientist taught one underlying principle: to do no harm. It is so important that it became a key part of the Hippocratic Oath taken by people entering the healing profession.

How closely do you think it’s actually followed in the twenty-first century?

Recently I took my son to a podiatrist after the pediatrician told me that’s who I would have to see and wrote out a referral. He’s 13 and has flat feet that point outwards when he walks.

The day arrived and we were ushered in. I’m sitting across from my boy when the doctor walks in, looks at him for less than a minute, and proceeds to tell me he will have to do a complicated surgery immediately. He won’t be able to walk for a year and will have a steel plate for the rest of his life. Right in front of my son!

Do no harm? Are you kidding me?

My 13 year old with a steel rod?

I wasn’t intimidated, but I was angry that he had scared my son. Instead, he is doing exercises to address the underlying issues.

If this were an isolated case, I wouldn’t be writing this. It’s not. Fear used to sell a $30,000 procedure (the insurance would pay for it, but not the real solution) is not unusual. It was a sales pitch, but how skeptical are we when pitched by a doctor?

Look at the training the medical profession receives: it’s all drug intervention and invasive surgeries.

I agree that there are times that these treatments are sometimes needed and save lives. But it shouldn’t be the norm when other means aren’t even considered.

For years I had been searching for a better way. In the process I found a very unique place, that is based on the crazy notion that the body is amazing and self-healing.

What a notion, that our bodies will actually do the work of healing if we just give them the tools and nutrition they need. Oh, and stop working them to death with processed foods.

Known as the Hippocrates Health Institute, it was named after the greek Hippocrates. Doing no harm and teaching people to take responsibility for their own health is the cornerstone of this healing center.

The experience I had at Hippocrates Institute was so completely different from the usual medical practice, I thought I had landed in paradise.

It seems like a miracle when the body goes into healing - from all manner of conditions: high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and tumors.
